๐Ÿ  Home Learning

There are lots of simple ways you can support your child's learning at home. Little and often is best.ย Regular reading, practising number facts and times tables, and talking about what your child is learning in school can make a real difference.

๐Ÿ“š Reading

We encourage children to read regularly at home, ideally for around 10โ€“15 minutes each day.ย

  • Reading their school reading book
  • Reading a library book or a favourite book from home
  • Reading comics, magazines or children's non-fiction
  • Listening to an adult read
  • Talking about what they have read

Try asking questions to deepend their understanding such as:

  • What has happened so far?
  • Why do you think the character did that?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What does this word mean?
  • Which part did you enjoy most and why?

โœ๏ธ Spelling and Writing

Children can support their writing skills at home by:

  • Practising their weekly spellings which are sent home in homework
  • Looking out for interesting words when reading
  • Practising handwriting
  • Writing for real purposes, such as shopping lists, letters, diaries, stories or instructions

Encourage children to say their sentence aloud before writing it and reread their work afterwards to check that it makes sense.

Our writing mantra is 'Think it, say it, write it, check it.'ย

๐Ÿ”ข Maths

Regular practice of key number facts helps children become quicker and more confident mathematicians.

Useful things to practise include:

Year 3

  • 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  • 3, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Number bonds
  • Mental addition and subtraction
  • Telling the time

Year 4

  • All multiplication tables up to 12 ร— 12
  • Related division facts
  • Number bonds and mental calculation
  • Telling the time
  • Using maths in everyday situations

Even a few minutes of practice regularly can help.
